Aldershot and Farnham Camera Club
2011 Second Round Print Competition
13th April 2011

David Fisher started the evening’s meeting where judge Paul Hampton would consider the entries to the Club’s 2011 Club Print Competition. He stated that two beginners had entered five prints and that twelve members had entered 34 prints in the open class. David Fisher introduced Paul Hampton as the competition Judge. Paul Hampton, a member of the Wokingham Camera Club stated that in judging he would be looking for three things first technical capability, can the entrant work the camera properly, second composition, does the photographer know and use the rules of composition and thirdly emotion how does the image make him feel.

The Judge made three maximum, 10 point awards and three 9.5 awards. The 10 point awards went to Tom Rowles for “Who me”. The Judge said a well-caught image, with good composition and depth of field. Pat Gibson for “Cliff Lift”. The Judge said the image made him feel as if he was falling into it and Tony Fisher for “The Icicle”. The Judge said the photographer had caught a moment in time, a single drop of water falling from the tip of the icicle.

The 9.5 awards were given to Simon Taylor for “Loading Gun”. The Judge said a good use of monochrome, with two ejected cartridges being caught mid-air in the midst of two frozen figures. Simon Taylor for “Farnborough Business Park”. The Judge said, again good use of monochrome and shape, the sharp edged buildings contrasting with the curve of the airship hanger. Tom Rowles for “London Lights”. The Judge said the image highlighted the short time at dusk where colour could be retained and it was caught here in a well composed image.

With two rounds to take place later in the year the evening’s results placed Tony Rowles in first place with 38 points, Simon Taylor in second place with 36.5 points and Rex Sellers in third place with 36 points. For information on Club competitions and activities please visit www.afccweb.net.
