Summary Of Competitions (revised October 2011)

Internal Competitions

1. Championship Competitions: There are separate championship ('aggregate') competitions for prints and projected digital images.  Each competition consists of four rounds, held throughout the calendar year; in each round, each member may submit up to three images. Each entry may be submitted on up to two occasions. Points counting towards the championship are those awarded to the highest two of three entries in each round.
2. Annual Competition: This is normally held in November with similar rules to the previous category, except that entries which have reached the submission limit for the Championship Competition may be entered in the Annual Competition, provided that they have not been entered in a previous Annual Competition.
3. The Don Beney and Charles Mutton Cups: These are 'themed' competitions, for which the theme is ratified by the previous AGM. The Beney Cup is for prints and the Mutton cup for digital images. Each member may enter up to 4 images in total.
4. Farnham Town Council Competition.  This competition is for an A4 print of a photograph of Farnham or the local area, and will be judged by the Mayor or a representative of Farnham Town Council.  Each member may submit two prints.  All photographs submitted will be made available to Farnham Town Council for use on their website and other publicity material.  Images used by Farnham Town Council will be attributed to the photographer, and copyright will be retained by the photographer.
5. Andrich Trophy (Pitch your Picture).  This competition is for projected digital images.  Each member may submit up to three images, and will be allotted a minute to present each picture to the audience, who will select the winning image by voting.

Federation Competitions
This Club is a member of both the Southern Photographic Federation (SPF) and the Surrey Photographic Association (SPA).  Currently we enter only the SPF League Competition. Entries for this (8 prints and 8 digital images) are selected in September and submitted on behalf of the Club. Competitions take place throughout the year (September - July).

Triangle Trophy
This is a friendly print competition between Aldershot & Farnham, Alton and Basingstoke clubs. Hosting is on a rotation basis. 10 prints are submitted by each club.

Spectrum Trophy and Heywood Trophy
These are both projected digital image competitions for individual members of three clubs: Aldershot & Farnham, Farnborough and Yateley. They are hosted by each club in rotation. Members may submit up to 2 images in total for these competitions with the Heywood being for any image and the Spectrum being themed, the theme subjects being in rotation. Members should be present personally or ensure another member is present to identify their entry and accept any award on their behalf.  Detailed rules for these competitions and for the Molesworth and Rainbow Cups are found on the Farnborough CC website.

Molesworth and Rainbow Cups
These are individual print competitions with similar rules to the Spectrum Trophy. The Molesworth Cup is awarded for the best monochrome print, and the Rainbow Cup for the best colour print.  Again, members may submit up to 2 images in total.

Other Competitions.  These are held on an ad hoc basis. Rules will be notified by the Competition Secretary.

General Rules For Internal Competitions

1. Entry to club competitions shall be limited to honorary and paid-up members of the club.
2. The entire content of a print or digital image must be the copyright of the author. No form of "clip art" or stock photography is permissible.
3. Digital images, and the titles for prints shall be given to the Competition Secretary not later than one week before the competition for which they are to be entered. Later entries will be accepted solely at the discretion of the Competition Secretary. The usual method to submit titles and images is via email to the competition secretary, please ask the competition secretary for other acceptable methods. All images will be given a reference number by the Competition Secretary and this must be quoted (or 'new image') when an image is entered for competition.  When prints are re-mounted or re-printed, or digital images are re-created, the existing reference number should be transferred to the new image.
4. Images for all club competitions including the Don Beney and Charles Mutton Cups and the Ladies v Gents should be submitted with titles which will be announced. Titles are particularly helpful in "Nature" photography: i.e. Species of plant, fungus, insect, animal or bird. An author who does not wish to have a title announced may submit his/her work as "untitled" or "no title". A title will, however, be required by the Competition Secretary for identification purposes within the club, but such title will not be announced. 
5. Images so similar as to be deemed identical by the Competition Secretary will be treated as identical for competition purposes.
6. Prints shall be no smaller than 165 X 115mm in size (excluding mount), and no larger than 500mm X 400mm, including the mount.  The size of a print will have no bearing on its score, except in as far as large prints may have more impact.
7. All prints shall be mounted, except those of first year beginners, which may be entered unmounted.
8. Prints must bear on the back the competitor's name and print title. Only the title, if the competitor wishes, may appear on the front.
9. Prints may be trade processed.
10. Images for digital projection should be sized to a resolution suitable for the projector to be used, currently a maximum of 1620 pixels wide  and a maximum of 1080 pixels high, but subject to revision by the Competition Secretary; images which are provided over this resolution will be down-sized, which may result in a loss of image quality.
11. Images for digital projection should be supplied to the Competition Secretary in jpeg or tiff format.
12. Images for digital projection should have a file name containing the image's AFCC reference number if it has been exhibited before, and the title of the image e.g. D123_Image Title.JPG.  Image reference and the title should be separated by underscore. If it has not been entered before, please use the image reference "Dxxx", i.e. Dxxx_Image title.jpg. Image file names should not contain any form of punctuation.  Images should be entered by email.
13. By submitting an image for a competition, the author grants to the club a non-exclusive royalty-free licence to reproduce that image electronically or in any other medium for publicity and any other non-commercial purposes. The club will attempt to ensure that the author is credited whenever the image is used. Any member who does not wish their images to be used in this way must notify the competition secretary in writing.

Championship Competition

1. All the general rules for internal competitions listed above shall apply.
2. Each member may submit up to three images in each format in each round of the championship i.e. three prints and three projected digital images.
3. There will be two classes of entry:- Beginners and Open. A new member of the club will normally submit entries in the Beginners class, but on the advice of the Competition Secretary, the new member may be immediately transferred by the Committee to the Open class. Otherwise, transfer to the Open class shall be by the decision of the Committee, following advice from the Competition Secretary. Such transfers shall be effective from the first competition following the Annual Competition. Normally a new member will be transferred to the Open class at the end of his or her first complete calendar year with the club.
4. Marks will be awarded by the judge for each entry (points to a maximum of 10), and these will be recorded.  However, for the purposes of the club championship only the two highest marks gained for each format in each round will be carried forward to the aggregate score for the member.  Half marks may be awarded.
5. An image may only be entered in one format in any single round of the Championship competitions.
6. A print or digital image may not be entered more than twice in any format for rounds of the Championship competitions.  This includes entries to the Championship competitions in previous years. 
7. The member with the highest aggregate number of points for each format will be declared the championship winner for that format.  In the event of a tie on points, the title will be shared, and the tying members will hold the trophy for an appropriate period of the year.
8. The Championship awards are as follows:

1. All the general rules for internal competitions listed above shall apply.
2. Each member may submit up to three images in each format .
3. There will be two classes of entry:- Beginners and Open. Entry to these will be determined as for the Championship.
4. An image may only be entered once in the Annual Competition, in one format.
5. Images entered in any previous Annual Competition are not eligible.
6. No points will be awarded.  The judge will select first, second and third place images, and at his discretion a small number of Highly Commended images, in each format.
7. The Annual awards are as follows:

1. The Don Beney and Charles Mutton Cups.
   a) Entries for the Don Beney Cup will be prints and for the Charles Mutton Cup will be digital images on a common theme selected by the previous Annual General Meeting.
   b) All the general rules for internal competitions listed above shall apply.
   c) There will be only one class open to all members.
   d) Each member may submit a total of four entries, which may be prints, digital images or a mixture of both.
   e) Entries from previous club competitions will be eligible.
   f) No points will be awarded, but in addition to the cup winners, 2nd 3rd and highly commended categories may be given.
2. Farnham Town Council Annual Competition
   a) This competition is for a photograph of Farnham or the local area within 10 miles.
   b) All photographs submitted will be made available to Farnham Town Council for use on their website  and publicity material.  Images used in this way will be attributed to the photographer, and copyright will be retained by the photographer.
   c) Photographs for the competition should be printed as an A4 print mounted on a black card approx. 30cm x 40cm. 
   d) There will be only one class open to all members.
   e) Each member may submit two prints for the competition, which will be judged by the Mayor or by a representative of Farnham Town Council. 
   f) The winner will be presented with the Annual Shield
3. Andrich Trophy 'Pitch Your Picture' Competition
   a)The competition is for projected digital images.  All submitted images will be in digital format, but may be derived from original images in any format.
   b) All the general rules for internal competitions listed above shall apply.
   c) Each member may submit up to three images.
   d) Each member has one minute when each of their images is displayed to provide supporting information to enhance the understanding of it or chance of gaining votes.
   e) Each image will be given a reference, which will be displayed as an overlay in the bottom left-hand corner of the displayed image.
   f) Images must have been created within the last 24 months
   g) Images may not have been entered for any previous AFCC competition.
   h) Judging/voting will be by the members themselves.
   -            Members eligible to vote are those present at the competition evening when the images are displayed.
   -            Each member has ten points to allocate.
   -            Ten points can be distributed amongst the images that the voting member sees fit.  i.e. they can give all ten points to just one image, or distribute their votes amongst other images in a ‘weighted’ fashion.
   -            A member may not vote for their own images.
   -            Voting is not anonymous so that the competition secretary can verify the voting.
   i) The Andrich Trophy will be presented to the creator of the image with the maximum score once the votes have been totalled.
   j) In the event of a tie on points, the image with the highest number of individual votes will take precedence.  In the event of these being equal, the image with the highest single vote (or highest number of these votes) will take precedence. (i.e. if one image had a maximum vote of 8 points, and the other had 7, then the prior image would win).

inter-club Competitions

1. For Federation Panel(s) the Competition Secretary will suggest possible prints and digital images which have received high marks in Club competitions during the previous year. The final choice of prints and digital images for panel(s) should be made by at least three experienced Committee/Club members.
2. Note that images used in previous league competitions (for whatever club or federation) are not eligible for use in SPF competitions.
3. For other Inter-club competitions selection may be made by the Competition Secretary or his designated deputy.
4. Prints and digital images selected for all Inter-club competitions will be in the care of the Competition Secretary (or Deputy) and will be returned to their owners as early as possible after the competition has ceased.
5. Titles for Federation and inter-club competitions will not be announced unless agreed between the clubs before judging begins.
